IT WASN'T LIKE THAT, IT WAS LIKE THIS
HANNAH HEILMANN (DK)
It Wasn't Like That, It Was Like This is a solo exhibition by the Danish artist Hannah Heilmann (b.1978) that discusses the estrangement of your external surroundings when you are metaphorically inside a computer.
The exhibition is the third in a series of such works by Heilmann. The first two parts were conducted in 2012 at the exhibition Deconstructing The Habit, ACNY in New York and during the performance festival Verbo, Galeria Vermelho in Sao Paulo.
The work sees Heilmann combine performance, installation and video which manifests the absence of the body and the space forsaken once you have entered the existence of one who has checked emails for 100 years, existing essentially in a past-in-the-future world. The home becomes virtual and the disparity between object, person and background is slowly dissolving.
At the opening of It Wasn't Like That, It Was Like This we will see the artist perform the work and perceive it's elucidation as a tableau. Heilmann writes emails to herself, walks over her table with the phone camera and falls asleep in front of the screen.
Heilmann has, in the last few years, been active mostly outwith Denmark. Her work about the Self is an abbreviated prolongation of the sense of meeting our surroundings. It Wasn't Like That, It Was Like This is Heilmann's first solo performance in Denmark.
Hannah Heilmann is a member of the collective consciousness Ingen Frygt (No Fear), the group psychosis Party And Lost and the of the artist run project space Toves Galleri.
